Though not customarily recognized as a meccaof good hip hop music, there`s been a recent boomin the past couple of years of highlygifted and recognizable Canadian hiphop artists. The hip hop scene first hit Canada in the 1980s.Rock music was the prevailing genreat the time and hip hop had a suppressed beginning. It remained an underground phenomenon till the 21stcentury.
In 2000, the CRTC awarded an FMstation to Milestone Radio. This same year.HipHopCanada.com was alsolaunched, becoming Canada`s biggest rap and hip hopweb site publications. The CBC also created a television series called Drop the Beat. The entire serieswas devoted the hip hop music as well as theexisting cutlure.A year later Canada got itsfirst urban music radio station, Flow 93.5 which soon started atrend in other towns. This allowed for ahuge avenue for Canadian hiphop artists. This spawned a complete mess of main line hiphop artistsfrom Canada such as Drake, OK Cobra, Classified, Buck sixtyfive, Shad, Kardinal Offishall, and others.Theadvent of satellite radio was also a blessing.Thesatellite radio network Bande made a compilation album called93 tours which featured unsigned hip hop artists from Quebec.
As years passed much of the radio trailblazers such as Flow 93.5 changedformats. They no longer bill themselves as pure urban stations but havebranched out to more modernclasses of music. The Canadian hip hop scene to thisday is still alive in spiteof some widely known artistsgaining notability.Radio stations are targeting their effortson artists with more mainstream and crossoverappeal, which makes hot hip-hopartists` probabilities of credit even slimmer. This region has to do with the muchsmaller black community that`s in Canada. An indie hip hop artistcan`t solely depend on the black community for supportbut must branch out and find crossover appeal in order tolaunch a successful career.
There are alsostereotypes at play that makes it difficultfor wrestling hip hop artists.Canada, tomany is thought of as the land of snow andigloos. Not only the hard, street toughened image many American hip hop artistsenjoy. The 1st time a Canadian hip hop artists made itbig in the united states was KardinalOffishall`s 2008 release of`Dangerous` incollaboration with American rap star Akon.Arguably famous Canadian hip-hop artist Drake reached the number two spot on the hothundred with is one "Best I Ever Had".This has been the mostrenowned single for a Canadian artist in theU.S.so far.
The Canadian hip hope scenestill has an up hill battle but has cum a great distance in a relatively shortquantity of time.Hopefully, with thecontinued success of artists like Drakeand Kardinal Offishall, unsigned hiphop artists will havea better chance of launching a successful career.
